The packages
Windows 11 has x64 and ARM64 packages. Ubuntu 24.04 has an x64 package. macOS has Intel and Apple Silicon packages. The VS Code Marketplace gives VS Code the package for its own operating system and architecture. Each package includes the engine, so you do not need a separate .NET runtime. See Install for the steps. If you use a remote VS Code host, its operating system and architecture determine the package.
Local model files
BIM files, TMDL folders and PBIP semantic-model projects can be opened across the supported platforms. You can inspect and change their definitions offline. A local file does not contain a running model’s query service. Data previews, measured storage and live validation need a connection that can run the required query.
Windows-only paths
Power BI Desktop discovery, local XMLA and local Power Query M preview require Windows 11 x64. Do not assume the Windows ARM64 package supports those paths. Local M preview evaluates supported query steps. It is separate from refreshing and loading a semantic model.
Remote sources and destinations
Remote XMLA connections can reach Power BI, Fabric and Azure Analysis Services. XMLA is the model service’s connection protocol. Access depends on the tenant, capacity, sign-in and your permissions. Fabric publishing and data agents have their own service requirements. Modern calendars require model compatibility level 1701 or later.
What needs a network
Local metadata work remains available without a network. Your assistant needs the connection its provider uses. Jev advice needs Pro, current permission for this model and an available advice service. An offline licence does not make advice, remote queries or publishing work offline.
